Continuing upon her desire to gather input from parents, educators, and mental health professionals throughout the state regarding her “Safe Screens, Healthy Minds” initiative, Senate Minority Deputy Leader Sue Rezin (R-Morris) has announced two new locations and dates for her roundtable series, as well as the launch of an online survey.

“Illinois is a large and diverse state with people from all different walks of life and perspectives,” said Senator Rezin. “It is critically important for me to gather feedback from as many Illinoisans as possible for my initiative.”

The second roundtable in Senator Rezin’s Safe Screens, Healthy Minds initiative will be in partnership with House Minority Leader Tony McCombie and Regional Office of Education #4, and it will take place on Monday, February 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Loves Park City Hall Civic Center. The third event will be in partnership with State Senator Terri Bryant, and takes place on Thursday, February 8 from 6 to 7:30 at the Mount Vernon Township High School Auditorium.

These two new events, as well as the first event at the Yorkville Middle School Auditorium on Wednesday, January 31, will complete the currently planned Safe Screens, Healthy Minds roundtables. To ensure that every Illinoisan has a chance to provide their input, Senator Rezin has launched an online survey for anyone who is unable to attend one of the upcoming roundtables.

“I believe the best way to discuss the harmful effects that social media may have on our state’s children is to have in-depth, personal conversations. However, I understand that not everyone wants to openly discuss the issues they have faced or have the ability to attend one of these meetings,” said Senator Rezin. “This online survey will allow those individuals an opportunity to share their thoughts and stories.”

Studies have revealed the deliberate design of social media platforms encourages harmful behaviors, intensifies issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and feelings of inadequacy, and provides a venue for unwanted sexual advances on minors. The ultimate goal of Sen. Rezin’s Safe Screens, Healthy Minds initiative is to directly address those concerns through the introduction and passage of legislation.
