Legislation proposed by State Senator Dave Syverson would require Illinois schools to teach students about the September 11 terrorist attacks each year.
Under current Illinois law, September 11 is recognized as a Day of Remembrance and is listed as a commemorative day. However, schools are not specifically required to provide instruction about the attacks.
Other states have already taken steps to require or expand 9/11 education in their schools. Supporters of the proposal say Illinois should take a similar step to ensure younger generations understand the significance of September 11 and its lasting impact on the country.
If adopted, the bill would require schools to set aside time each year, even if just a few minutes, to teach students about 9/11. Discussion could include the events leading to the attacks, the foreign and domestic policy that followed, remembrance of the lives lost, the role and courage of the first responders, and how selflessly citizens stepped up to volunteer after the attack.
The legislation has been introduced and awaits further action in the General Assembly.
